Back to Burma Mr. President? An alliance with Chairman Ping to round up these junta thugs could free these good peaceful people in minutes.

The 2024 Freedom House report on Myanmar labels the country as “Not Free” with a pathetic score, a measly 8 out of 100, reflecting a severe decline in both political rights and civil liberties. This decline was inevitable after the military coup in February 2021, which overthrew the elected civilian government and installed a military junta.
Here are some key takeaways from the report:
Political Rights:
- The military junta has effectively dismantled any semblance of democratic institutions, with the elected parliament dissolved and political leaders detained. One Myanmar craftsman and hobbyist reported on Facebook that he was jailed for flying rubber band-powered models, which the thugs led by Min Aung Hlaing considered an intrusion on their airspace.
- Elections are indefinitely postponed and the junta has extended the state of emergency, further solidifying its power. However, recent reports of desertions and forced conscription have the coup masters scrambling to hold power over the peace-loving people of Myanmar, historically known as Burma.
- The military exerts significant control over political life, using harsh tactics to suppress dissent and opposition. They also suppress personal liberty, such as outlawing RC toys and technology.

Civil Liberties:
- Freedom of expression is severely restricted, with media censored and journalists facing imprisonment. But that hasn’t stopped intrepid entrepreneurs, craftsmen, and NUG, the National Unity Government, from using Facebook and other social media to keep the outside world current.
- Assembly and association rights are suppressed, with peaceful protests met with violence and arrests. Apparently, a rural family of four flying kites and model airplanes qualifies as an illegal assembly, resulting in jail time for the offenders.
- The military has also escalated its use of violence against ethnic minorities, leading to mass displacement and human rights abuses.
- Freedom of movement is restricted, with checkpoints and curfews imposed by the military, and the Rohingya population remains severely restricted. Avoiding forced conscription to replenish the thug army is the new challenge for Myanmar’s men now, as the junta’s power wavers and armed resistance from freedom-loving citizens gains momentum.
The report paints a stark picture of Myanmar’s descent into authoritarianism, highlighting the ongoing human rights abuses committed by the military junta and the suppression of basic freedoms. Recent developments give us hope that Myanmar can be free again under its duly elected leaders.
So what can we do about it now? While the struggle for freedom continues, we can support the efforts of Myanmar’s craftsmen and women who continue to create and contribute to the hobby world and others as they endure the chaos of living under the wavering fist of the coup conspirators desperate to maintain their tyranny.
